At a little after noon I embarked around the shoreline of the
Skokie Lagoons at the Willow Road Dam right after the end of a
violent thunderstorm, and as I trekked through the mud birds (the
primary purpose for my expedition) were congregating in the
tops of trees in expectation of the continuing of the storm and
lightning flashed ominously across the water. The rain swept away
the nuisance of spiders, but every step I took near a bush
prompted an ambush of mosquitoes. The positive side to all of
this was the presence of waterbirds (ducks, a heron, cormorants,
geese, and killdeers) and dragonflies.
